About the School of Medicine

It’s time to transform medical education. Toronto Metropolitan University’s School of Medicine is being designed to shift the paradigm of healthcare delivery and improve the well-being of individuals, families and communities. With a community-driven, intentionally inclusive approach, the new school will train doctors whose cultural awareness and humility are as crucial as their medical skills.

The opportunity

The Director, Curriculum (Phase 1) is a key leadership position within the UGME Program at the Toronto Metropolitan University’s (TMU) School of Medicine and ensures the Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) learning aligns with the vision and mission of the School of Medicine and Toronto Metropolitan University. The Director, Curriculum (Phase 1) provides academic leadership for the development and implementation of all aspects of UGME learning and participates in leading curriculum integration among courses across Phase 1. This includes overseeing and engaging in Phase 1 creation, delivery, assessment, progression, and remediation. The Director, Curriculum (Phase 1) role includes chairing subcommittees and will ensure the UGME Program achieves success using ongoing quality improvement while meeting all accreditation standards and elements as mandated by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) and the Province of Ontario’s Institutional Quality Assurance Process (IQAP).

The Director Curriculum (Phase 1) works collaboratively across all Phases with Thread Leads, Associate Directors of Curriculum, and other UGME Education Leaders to ensure the delivery of an integrated four-year competency-based experiential curriculum - aligned with the principles of the Master Adaptive Learner.

Qualifications

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent medical degree.
  • Masters’ in Education or equivalent in educational program preferred. A Diploma for the Clinician Educator Area of Focused Competence will be considered equivalent to Masters’ level training.
  • Must have or be eligible for an appointment to the TMU Clinical Faculty.
  • Must be eligible to hold an appointment at a TMU School of Medicine affiliated clinical partner institution or academic health centre. 
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience as a member of a School of Medicine clinical faculty, preferably with experience in designing and delivering medical education, including curriculum development and innovation.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in medical education and must have evidence of administrative and curricular responsibilities in a Medical School educational activity.
  • Knowledge of and understanding of the implementation of competency-based education.
  • Physician in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of

Ontario (CPSO) and active membership with the College of Family Physicians of

Canada (CFPC) or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC), or equivalent.

  • Extensive knowledge of undergraduate medical education curriculum so as to lead in and enable design and delivery within and across the UGME curriculum.
  • Ability to construct and lead innovative curriculum and/or assessment practices with change management. 
  • Experience with innovative student-centred pedagogical approaches to learning.
  • Strong leadership, communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Leadership skills and ability to engage in collaborative consultations and effective respectful communications with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Knowledge, understanding and/or experience of quality improvement processes and application through educational evaluation in medical education. 
  • Demonstrated success working in collaborative in-person and virtual teams.
  • Ability to meet pressured and tight deadlines and outcomes.
  • Experience with embedding EDI into administrative activities and leadership practices and insights on integrating these values into the curriculum development.
  • Strong commitment and focus to principles of equity, diversity, inclusion (EDI) in learning, patient care and leadership, with a track record of advancing EDI and decolonization.
  • Record of educational research, and publication/presentations for peer review.
