              Welcome to the Betinho Project

                              Let's Honour Betinho!

The Betinho Project was inspired by the desire to honour Betinho, a former resident of Toronto who is one of Brazil's national heroes and a key figure in the history of food security.  According to Wayne Roberts "... he inspired the world's largest and most dynamic experiment to end physical and spiritual hunger and revere life.

Betinho was perhaps best known for his "Citizens's Action Against Hunger and for Life" campaign, which he promoted along with iBase, the institute he helped found.

In 1997, Betinho received an honorary doctorate granted by York University.  In the 70's, when living in Toronto, Betinho created Brazilian Studies, which  became the Centre for Research on Latin America and the Caribbean at York Univesity.  He was also a central figure in two other organizations: the Development Education Centre (DEC) and Gatt-Fly.

The Betinho Project's first undertaking involves funding the building of a bake oven in Betinho's honour. The Betinho Project is hoping to rekindle Betinho's connection to Toronto through a number of educational activities celebrating Betinho's life and legacy.
