Geomatics Engineering PhD candidate Wai Yeung Yan won the best student paper award in the Canadian Association of Geographers - Ontario Division (CAGONT) 2011 Annual Meeting held at Lakehead University (Orillia Campus) on October 21-22. Yan's paper, entitled "Radiometric correction of airborne LiDAR intensity data for improving land cover mapping of urban area", ranked the best in the doctoral research paper category. Since competition’s inception in 1997, this is the first time that a Ryerson student has won best paper in the doctoral category. Yan’s work was supervised by Dr. Ahmed Shaker from the Department of Civil Engineering.

Yan also attended the Ontario Association for Impact Assessment (OAIA) 2011 Annual Conference at the Ontario Science Centre on October 26-27 and won first place in the student poster challenge. Yan’s poster, entitled “Urban hydrologic impact assessment using high resolution stereo satellite imagery”, will be featured on the OAIA website. His work was jointly supervised by Drs. Ahmed Shaker and Darko Joksimovic from the Department of Civil Engineering.
