On Saturday May 12, Ryerson University will host a full day of science, engineering and family fun at Yonge-Dundas Square with Science and Engineering @ Ryerson, a Science Rendezvous event. Inquisitive minds will find the Square full of interactive exhibits, demonstrations and stage shows that present an intriguing and engaging look at scientific marvels and technological masterpieces. Science and Engineering @ Ryerson is part of Science Rendezvous, a free nation-wide event and Canada’s largest public science festival.

Ryerson students and faculty, partners from OCAD-U and not-for-profit science outreach organizations, along with contributors from UOIT, York University and the University of Toronto, will host dozens of events throughout the day. Below are some highlights not to be missed; a full program listing of the day’s events can be found at http://ryersonrendezvous.com.

Sumo Robot Challenge

Celebrate the 20th anniversary of the OCAD-U Sumo Robot Challenge as Ryerson University and OCAD-U present the new class of sumo robots:  bigger, smarter and tougher than ever!

Renaissance and “Perpetual Motion” Machines

Go back in time with a look at working models of Renaissance machines created from the original drawings of Leonardo da Vinci, Agostino Ramelli and Jaques Besson. This popular exhibit from the people at the Canadian Young Scientist Journal includes several “perpetual motion” machines.

Stage Shows

The stage at Yonge-Dundas Square will come alive throughout the day with science-themed music and dance performances.  Students from Ryerson’s renowned Dance program will help physics professor Pedro Goldman weave a story of alternative universes.  Musician Jeff Burke will play a theremin concert, and the inventor of the hydraulophone, Steve Mann, will perform and explain the science behind the instrument.
