Frank Walwyn, distinguished visiting scholar at The Chang School

One of Canada's top litigation lawyers, Frank Walwyn has been named Distinguished Visiting Scholar at The Chang School.

Frank Walwyn, one of Canada’s top litigation lawyers, has been appointed as a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at Ryerson University’s G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education. His one-year appointment is effective immediately.

“I am pleased to have one of Canada’s most brilliant legal minds join our university,” says John Isbister, Interim Provost and Vice President Academic of Walwyn’s appointment. “He will be a welcome addition to our university family with his extensive knowledge in legal matters.”

Walwyn is frequently consulted and appears as counsel on complex litigation matters in both Canada and the Caribbean. The cases he litigates range from multi-jurisdictional corporate disputes involving shareholders rights and directors’ duties, to high-stakes commercial disputes and complex trusts matters. Many of Walwyn’s cases have led to important or precedent-setting judgments, including in the areas of venue selection, constitutional rights and the court’s jurisdiction to grant relief involving foreign elements.

“Frank’s appointment to The Chang School reinforces our commitment to providing the best university-based adult education to our students and to life-long learning,” says Dean Gervan Fearon, The Chang School. “Under his expertise and guidance, we will be able to explore more international opportunities and partnerships, including in the area of adult continuing education.”

Walwyn is an active member of many legal and community boards and initiatives and a champion of diversity in the legal profession. He is the past president of the Canadian Association of Black Lawyers, a member of the International Training Committee of The Advocates’ Society and a member of the Judicial Appointments Advisory Committee for appointments to the Ontario Provincial Court. In recognition of his expertise in resolving complex legal challenges, Walwyn was named as one of Canada’s top lawyers in the area of corporate and commercial litigation in the 2012 edition of The Best Lawyers in Canada. He also received an Alumni Award of Distinction from Ryerson University in 2012 for his outstanding professional achievements and personal service to his community.

“I look forward to collaborating with my colleagues at The Chang School to build on their established reputation as Canada’s leading school for adults who are passionate about lifelong learning and improving their skills,” says Walwyn, a partner with Toronto-based law firm WeirFoulds LLP.

A native of St. Kitts and Nevis, Walwyn is a sought-after speaker on legal issues in Canada and the Caribbean. Walwyn offers expertise on e-discovery and document retention issues arising in litigation and business. He is also a frequent commentator in the legal and general media in these areas.

After graduating from the University of Toronto, Walwyn earned a certificate in business administration through The Chang School at Ryerson University. He then attended law school at Queen’s University.
