All eight of Ryerson University’s undergraduate engineering programs have received accreditation status by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB). The CEAB accredits undergraduate engineering programs that provide academics training for licensure as a professional engineer in Canada.

Ryerson’s biomedical engineering program, the first and only stand-alone accredited undergraduate biomedical engineering program in English Canada, underwent its first-ever review. The program achieved the maximum accreditation duration for a new program.

“We are so pleased to have achieved accreditation status once again for our engineering programs, and for the first time for biomedical engineering,” says Mohamed Lachemi, dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Science at Ryerson. “This wonderful achievement is due, in part, to the dedication and hard work of our faculty and our staff and speaks to Ryerson’s commitment to innovative, experiential learning and to the advancement of knowledge and research in addressing societal need.”

Accredited engineering programs in Canada must contain adequate mathematics, science and engineering curriculum content. Programs must also develop students’ communication skills, and provide students with an understanding of the environmental, cultural, economic and social impacts of engineering on society, with the concepts of sustainable development, and with the capacity for life-long learning. The process of accreditation emphasizes the quality of the students, the academic and support staff, the curriculum and the educational facilities. Graduates of a CEAB-accredited program are permitted to join Professional Engineers Ontario, or its counterparts in other provinces, and to describe themselves as Professional Engineers (P.Eng.) after completion of a work period under the supervision of a licensed engineer and after passing examinations in law and ethics.

Ryerson’s biomedical engineering program will be eligible for review in 2015. The visit for all other engineering programs; Aerospace, Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Industrial and Mechanical, is expected in 2018.
