INTERMISSION

Light Print by Jesse Obremski

Producer's Note

We are delighted to welcome you to SPRINGWORKS 2023! Spring is my favourite time of year. It is a time of renewal, transformation, and hope. It is the gradual return of sunlight and the awakening of nature following the cold winter months. The increase in energy, warmth and movement all around us is palpable. In many ways, my appreciation of spring and my love of dance share many similarities.

After years of heightened challenges in what seems like an increasingly polarized world, the performing arts — with their ability to enlighten, inspire, and cultivate compassion — may be more indispensable than ever. I feel so proud of our students, who choose to dedicate their time and energy to dance, an ancient and yet often misunderstood art form. Dance brings forward the language of the body, a poetic language made of breathing flesh, fluid bones, and pounding heartbeats. This language transcends cerebral understanding and, therefore, inevitably speaks profound truth. It remains a relevant language worth listening to and fighting for.

We are proud to present a mixed program of new dance works created by two distinct and stimulating choreographers.

The evening will begin with ASTRO HIVE, a compelling work by Toronto-based multi-talented artist Valerie Calam. Her choreography is performed by our dynamic and skillful third-year class. We are thankful she is sharing her craft and experience with our students!

The evening will conclude with Light Print, a thought-provoking work by New York-based choreographer and Gibney Company Artistic Associate Jesse Obremski. His work, commissioned and produced in partnership with Fall for Dance North, is performed by our inspiringly accomplished graduating class.

Also joining us for SPRINGWORKS are acclaimed lighting designers Arun Srinivasan and Asami Morita and costume designer/design mentor Bronwyn Pel.

Sincere thanks to School of Performance Chair Caroline O’Brien and dance faculty member Tanya Evidente for their ongoing support.

On behalf of the Performance Dance program, we would like to thank the students, faculty and staff in the Performance Production program for their hard work and dedication. Without them and their efforts, this production would not be possible.

And, of course, I thank you, our audience, who chose to share this moment with us. Your interest and support mean the world to the dancers. I hope you enjoy SPRINGWORKS 2023!

Costume Design by Hannah Dulong

Scenic & Property Designer: Margaret Steinbach

Choreographer's Note

ASTRO HIVE is a new work created in collaboration with the 3rd year dancers.  As an organizational tool, I grouped the performers according to their astrological sun signs and elements.  I offered detailed movement phrases, self-directed explorations, states of the body practice derived from my thesis research, and improvisational tools to structure the work.  I’ve asked the dancers to work with rigour on specific tasks, to make decisions in-the-moment in relation to the ‘music of their movement', while considering the other bodies and energies in the space.
