2025–2030 Strategic Research Plan Development

About

The 2020–2025 Strategic Research Plan (SRP) articulates the university’s key research themes, which represent Toronto Metropolitan University’s (TMU) strengths and reflect the diverse scholarly, research and creative (SRC) activity that is taking place across the institution.

The Strategic Research Plan is required by the Federal government (external link, opens in new window)  to support the university’s applications for major institutional funding (e.g., Canada Research Chairs Program, Canada Foundation for Innovation).

Guided by a Steering Committee, the Office of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation (OVPRI) is now undertaking the development of a new 2025–2030 Strategic Research Plan. The university is also undertaking a review of its Academic Plan. The alignment of the two plans provides an opportunity to highlight areas of strength and reaffirm the university’s commitment to scholarly, research and creative activity.

Principles to Guide the Strategic Research Plan Development

In line with TMU’s mission, vision and values, the development of a new Strategic Research Plan will be guided by the following principles:

  • Inclusion: The review will involve a wide array of stakeholders and provide the opportunity for diverse perspectives to be included in the conversation.
  • Transparency: Regular reports will be provided to the SRC Leaders Group, and communication best practices will be employed throughout the review.
  • Excellence: Areas of strength will be identified based on impact, funding, contribution to training (e.g., graduate training), collaborations and partnerships, innovation, national/international reputation, and depth and excellence of research.
  • Equity: The review will be underpinned by the university’s commitment to following and implementing the Dimensions Charter (external link, opens in new window) .

How to Participate

We invite all members of the university community to review the  (PDF file) draft 2025–2030 Strategic Research Plan and share your thoughts, suggestions and questions. Your input is essential to ensure that the final plan reflects the aspirations and priorities of our SRC community.

The draft will be available for feedback from May 15, 2024, to June 14, 2024. All comments received will be carefully considered by the SRP Steering Committee through the revision and finalization process.

Whether you provide input through the feedback form (external link) , attend a focus group or Town Hall (external link) , or send an email to the Steering Committee, we genuinely appreciate your participation and sharing your perspective.

Consultation Schedule

We will be holding four Town Halls: two virtual and two in-person.

For those attending in person, the Town Hall will take place in the Office of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation (OVPRI) boardroom (YDI-1134), located at 1 Dundas Street West on the 11th Floor. For those attending remotely, a calendar invitation with the Zoom link will be sent upon registration for a Town Hall.

We will also be hosting four focused engagement sessions, which will be held virtually. Upon registration for a focus group session, you will receive a calendar invitation with the Zoom link. While each focus group session is for a targeted audience, members of TMU’s SRC community are welcome to register for any session they wish to attend.

Please note that the Town Halls and focus group sessions use the same presentation, format and consultation questions.

Consultation Questions:

  1. Does the draft 2025–2030 Strategic Research Plan reflect TMU’s SRC strengths and institutional priorities?
  2. What feedback do you have on the draft 2025–2030 Strategic Research Plan?
  3. Do you have any other comments or questions?

We have established multiple channels to make it convenient for you to contribute to the development of the Strategic Research Plan. In addition to the Focus Groups and Town Halls, you can also complete the draft 2025–2030 Strategic Research Plan Feedback Form (external link)  before June 14, 2024.
